Birth

It all started when…

I was approached by a friend that said, “How would you feel about photographing my birth?

As a 20 something year old that question took me way off guard. I wasn’t even dating anyone at the time so the thought of being part of a birth was SO far off my radar. But, for some reason, I found myself saying, “Uhmm, sure!”

I got the text that she was in labor and I rushed to the hospital - having absolutely no idea what to expect. I found myself wondering, “How long does having a baby take?” And, “There is absolutely no way that baby is gonna fit out of there.”

But what I wasn’t expecting to see was this husband and wife work so hard together - like a team that has been practicing for just this moment. She said one word and he would hold her hand or put a towel to her forehead. I watched in amazement as she roared her baby into the world. The new dad was a puddle of tears as he saw this new life emerge. And I felt my own tears flowing as this little baby instinctively clung to their mama’s braided hair.

Honestly, it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. And I was completely HOOKED ON BIRTH. It feels so empowering to show women how strong, capable, and beautiful they are as they bring forth new life. It’s an honor to be welcomed into these sacred, raw moments.

Fast forward many years later and I’m still photographing births. With each of my kids I hired a birth photographer and those images are BY FAR some of my very most treasured images. I’m forever thankful for them and feel so blessed to be able to create them for the next mama.
